Web Real-Time Communication or simply WebRTC is an API open sourced by Google. Recently, Mozilla and Google demoed one of the more exciting applications to this API with cross-browser video chat. Have a look at the demo here:
It should also be worth noting that this was done using another Google open source technology, WebM. WebM or VP-8 is a codec and container alternative to H.264/MP4. It’s really showing some great progress. More progress in open standards like this will allow us to break free from bull sh** proprietary apps and allow us to embrace a less inhibited and less locked down internet.
